The Importance of Having a Will
Do I need a Will?
A recent Gallup poll found that only 46% of U.S. adults have a will that describes how they would like their money and estate to be handled after death. That statistic is unfortunate because it is one of the easiest steps an individual can take to ensure that your probate property will be distributed as you intended. Absent a will, your probate property will be distributed in accordance with the Ohio Statute of Descent and Distribution (you can read the specifics at ORC Section 2105.06). It is important to periodically review your will with an attorney in order to keep it up to date. A will is also how you select the executor for your estate and commonly provides for the nomination of a guardian if there are minor children.
